NUCA Brings Back Leadership Institute

Back by popular demand, the NUCA Foundation for Education and Research’s Leadership Institute will be offered at the NUCA headquarters in Arlington, Va., on Feb. 25-29.

Designed especially for current and rising project managers, estimators and supervisors, the NUCA Institute’s core curriculum focuses on front-office management, including finance, insurance, contracts and negotiation, estimating, safety management, and industry relations. The program was developed by a team of utility contractors and is taught by experienced faculty who understand the diverse challenges of running a profitable and successful utility construction company.

One of the featured instructors is Charles Vander Kooi of Vander Kooi and Associates Inc. Last seen at Utility Construction EXPO ’05 in Orlando, Fla., Vander Kooi has been involved in the construction industry for more than 39 years — 15 years as a professional estimator and contractor and 24 years as a consultant and speaker. As an instructor, he combines his true-life experiences in the construction industry with stand-up comedy and a little fire and brimstone.

Please contact Foundation Executive Director Bill Plenge at (703) 358-9300 if you are interested in signing up for the Institute program.

PUCA Supports PA One-Call

The Pennsylvania Utility Contractors Association (PUCA) showed itself to be a big supporter of the Pennsylvania one-call system at two events last fall. On Sept. 13, PUCA had a booth at the PA one-call system’s annual Safety Day in Pittsburgh. NUCA/PUCA also sponsored the tote bags distributed to each attendee. On Oct.11, PUCA President Tim Greenland spoke at the Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission’s Gas Safety Day in State College, Pa. Eight NUCA/PUCA contractor firms participated in a group discussion with governmental regulatory persons, facility owners, municipal officials and engineering firms to further improve safety under the PA One Call law.

Chapter 2 of NUCA Pipe Installation Training Program Now Available

Chapter 2 — Excavations, Trenching, Manholes and Backfilling — of NUCA’s new Pipe Installation Training Program is now available at the NUCA Store. Sponsored by NUCA’s Foundation for Education and Research and developed by experienced contractors and educators, this comprehensive, easy-to-understand series of interactive CDs covers the fundamentals of water and sewer pipe installation. Each chapter in the series presents with clarity a core component of the pipe installation process.

The self-paced instruction is powerful and includes video clips, diagrams, photographs and animations that drive home these important skills. Each CD also includes quiz questions to reinforce learning and a graded final exam. The program is appropriate for self-study or group training and eliminating expensive installation errors, conserving valuable materials and teaching your crews to work together more productively. Following the release of Excavations, Trenching, Manholes and Backfilling, the next four chapters to be released include Job Layout, Working with Pipe, Surveys and Grades and Testing and Chlorination.

To place an order, visit the NUCA store at www.nuca.com or call (800) 662-6822.

NUCA of Las Vegas Presents Backhoe/Equipment Rodeo

NUCA of Las Vegas held its third annual Backhoe and Equipment Rodeo on Nov. 3 at Dimick Development; Chuck Dimick continued his role as Committee Chair of this event. After a practice session for contestants, the Clark County fire department heavy rescue team headed by Captain Leo Durkin gave a demonstration of a trench cave-in rescue in a special trench excavated on the rodeo grounds. The rescue team also had its emergency vehicles on hand to display the variety of equipment used in different types of rescue operations. Tom Hollis of Bravo Underground provided the vacuum truck.

Other events included: backhoe trilogy of golf, baseball and tire stacking; excavator wagon race; and skid steer soccer. Gary Davis took first in the backhoe trilogy, Todd Hilk in the excavator wagon race and Dan McCarthy in skid steer soccer. Each first-place contestant received $500 and a leather jacket monogrammed with “2007 Backhoe Rodeo Champion” on the back. New to the event this year, was an exhibition area for safety-related companies to display equipment and distribute literature regarding their products and services.

NUCAORSWW Holiday Auction Raises the Bar

On Nov. 17, 350 NUCA of Oregon and Southwest Washington (NUCAORSWW) members and their guests enjoyed an evening filled with glitz and glamour at the association’s 6th Annual Holiday Auction. In keeping with the “Hooray for Hollywood” theme, attendees came to The Governor Hotel in Portland, Ore., in beautiful evening dresses, tuxes and costumes.

Ritchie Bros. Auctioneers did a masterful job of encouraging bidder participation and were instrumental in the event realizing sales of $137,000. Executive Director Melinda Dailey attributes the enormous success of the annual event to Auction Chair Kathy Moore and her committee — Jennifer Dixson, Dawn Morse, Nancy Pereau, Jamie Moore, Lisa Moore, Kendall Moore, Kelly Moore, Janelle Markovich, Connie Graybeal, Shanna Kerr and Cynthia Hilton.

“Together,” said Dailey, “they raise the bar year after year.” Proceeds from the auction will go toward establishing a full scholarship at the Northwest College of Construction in Portland, Ore., funding the $1,000 high school and college scholarships currently offered by the chapter and helping to offset operating costs. This year’s high school scholarship recipient was Lindsay Short, daughter of Dave and Jan Short of S-2 Contractors Inc., who is currently a freshman majoring in Journalism at the University of Oregon. The college recipient was Emily Miletich, daughter of John and Barbara Miletich of Moore Excavation Inc., who is currently a sophomore majoring in Civil Engineering at Oregon State University.

sGUCA Members Shoot Skeet for Scholarship

The Georgia Utility Contractors Association (GUCA) Scholarship Foundation held its 2007 Scholarship Foundation Skeet Shoot at the Tom Lowe Shooting Grounds in Atlanta on Nov. 5, with 97 participants from 31 companies. Willow Construction Inc.’s Sharp Shooters took first-place honors with a team score of 71. Sharp Shooter Jimmy Bragg won Best Individual Shooter after a friendly shoot-off with six additional shooters that each shot a score of 15.

The money raised from the tournament will go toward the GUCA Scholarship Foundation, which awards scholarships to the children of GUCA members who will be graduating high school seniors and attending a four-year college or university in Georgia. The winners are chosen based on scholastic achievement, extra-curricular activities, community service, career goals and completion of an essay. In 2007, the GUCA Scholarship Foundation added a new scholarship opportunity for members’ children who plan to enter the utility construction workforce.

Sponsors for the 2007 Scholarship Foundation Skeet Shoot included: Action Tire Co.; Robert M. Anderson Inc.; Athens Commercial Tire; AUC Inc.; C.A. Murren and Sons Co. NUCA’s Delaware Chapter Celebrates 30th Anniversary

On Nov. 16, the Delaware Utility and Transportation Contractors Association (DUTCA) celebrated its 30th anniversary at the Dover Downs Convention Center. After dinner and birthday cake, attendees got down to the business of presentations, recognition of past presidents and awards.

The speakers included: DUTCA President Chad Reed, NUCA CEO Bill Hillman, NUCA President James King and Delaware Contractors Association Executive Vice President John McMahon. The Herb Brown Associate of the Year was presented to HD Waterworks, and the Dave Shevock Ditch Digger of the Year Award was given to George and Lynch Inc. and J. Marion Bryan and Sons.

In comparing the list of DUTCA members in 1997 with the 2007 list, Hillman noted that at least four of the original members have also been 30-year members of the national organization — Dover Plumbing Supply Co., George and Lynch Inc., Kuhn Construction Co. Inc. and Teal Construction Inc.
