Americans for Pure Water Campaign Launches New Blog

The Americans for Pure Water (APW) campaign is a grassroots initiative of the Clean Water Council — a coalition of 32 national associations and labor unions representing contractors, skilled craftsmen, design professionals, manufacturers, suppliers and other professionals committed to ensuring a high quality of life through sound environmental infrastructure.

Kicked off in April 2006, the APW campaign raises public awareness about the worsening condition of infrastructure, spells out the real-world impact of this massive deterioration on daily life, describes the powerful economic and public health benefits of new and rehabilitated facilities and mobilizes the public to demand that Congress and the Administration do something about the problem. The latest weapon in the APW arsenal is a blog called “Water News Update.”

On a daily basis, alarming headlines from around the country document the most severe water and wastewater infrastructure failures. By collecting representative media stories in one place — as well as reporting on what private organizations, individuals and government entities are doing and not doing about the problem — “Water News Update” will: 1) help readers connect the dots, so that they will have a clearer picture of why increased federal investment is needed to prevent catastrophic failure of this country’s water and sewer systems and 2) generate conversation about what needs to be done to repair them.

Readers are encouraged to leave comments about content (updated daily) and make blog posts. NUCA staff has already made key staff on Capitol Hill aware of the blog and invited them to post opinions and perspectives as well. Questions and comments about the new blog (waternewsupdate.com) should be addressed to NUCA Government Relations Coordinator Ben Gann at (703) 358-9300.

NUCA of Iowa Holds 2008 Convention

NUCA President Terry Dillon (far left) administered the oath of offi ce to the 2008 NUCA of Iowa Offi cers — (left to right), Andy Wolf (President), Mike Schmitt (Vice President), Brent Klaiber (Secretary/Treasurer) and Deb Liles (Contractor Director).

NUCA of Iowa held its 2008 Convention in Des Moines, Iowa, on Feb. 8. Educational sessions covered jobsite theft prevention, OSHA inspections, the new proposed confined space regulations and employment services for individuals coming out of the state and federal prison systems. The last program — “Rethinking Ex-Offender Reentry” — was presented by Iowa Workforce Development in collaboration with the Iowa Department of Corrections and the Southern District of Iowa Federal Probation.

The Honorable Robert W. Pratt, Chief Judge of the Southern District of Iowa Federal Court, was the program’s keynote speaker. Chapter Vice President Brandon Young (Miller the Driller) spoke of his success in hiring some 30 ex-offenders and the value they have brought to the company. The concluding banquet was attended by more than 130 people, including NUCA President Terry Dillon, who brought greetings from NUCA and installed the newly elected officers. Lynn Young was introduced as the new Chapter Administrator; she replaces retiring Executive Director Steve Halstead. UCAC Holds Successful Spring Membership Meeting

The Utility Contractors Association of Connecticut (UCAC) held its Spring General Membership Meeting on March 26 at The Gallery in Glastonbury, Conn. Guest speakers Jerry Farrell Jr., Commissioner of Connecticut’s Department of Consumer Protection (DCP) and Richard Hurlburt, DCP’s Director of Occupational and Professional Licensing, reviewed for attendees Connecticut’s P-6 and P-7 licensing requirements. Utility Contractors Association of Connecticut (UCAC) Secretary David Ambrose (Wethersfield Construction) had a very useful discussion with Commissioner Farrell about the possibility of streamlining the state’s licensing requirements to better reflect what utility contractors do. (They are currently subject to the plumbing license requirements.) For more information about UCAC, visit www.ctconstruction.org.
