In Celebration of Family

Half of this year has gone by at warp speed...or so it seems. I am not sure if it is my age, the challenges of running a successful company or this age of technology that has caused time to fly. There are times when I’d like to go back to my high school days when time seemed to stand still as I waited for “real” life to begin. These days, I’d settle for just slowing it down a little so that I can enjoy the piece of the “American Dream” that I’ve been able to claim — not just admire the acquisition of it, but really live it.

I know that the so-called “American Dream” has become something of a cliché and in some cases synonymous with grabbing as much of the almighty dollar as one can, but for me, the foundation of the dream is still the same as it always was — life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. And, my pursuit of happiness has always centered on family.

During the summer school break, I will be spending time with my grandchildren and their parents watching the “Dream” pass from one generation to another. Boating, skiing, swimming, fishing and fun will be the orders of the day. No business, no phones, no technology — just sun and fun, laughs and giggles. For me, there is nothing greater than the feeling of watching your children grow up into responsible and productive adults and all the while having a fun time getting there with them. And my children’s children? When I hear “Grandpa, Grandpa!” It’s music to my ears.

But enough about me — what about you? I know that I am not in a position to declare July “Celebrate the Family Month,” but if I were, here is what I would say: Children are out of school on summer break looking for and needing parenting, companionship and mentoring to meet life’s challenges. Take some time this month to do just that — be a parent, companion or mentor. Spend some quality time with your spouse or significant other. If you have not talked with or seen your parents lately, make the effort because they will not be around forever. And what about that brother or sister who lives across the country? Pick up the phone or send an e-mail if you can’t make the trip.

However you do it, just let your family members know how much you love and appreciate them. If you don’t have a family, “adopt” one or create one with your friends, colleagues or neighbors. There is no greater happiness than the love and companionship of a strong and caring family, whatever its composition.

Tick, Tock, the clock is running. Don’t let time run out on you.

Regards,
