Sponsors Needed for New APW Economic Impact Study

In April, Americans for Pure Water (APW) — a public relations campaign managed by the Clean Water Council (CWC) — announced that it would undertake a study that would quantify the economic benefits of constructing and maintaining America’s water and wastewater infrastructure. In commenting on the potential value of the study, NUCA CEO Bill Hillman had this to say: “By revising and expanding the much-heralded CWC findings from the early 1990s, the new findings will be instrumental in our struggle to draw public and political attention to the growing infrastructure crisis and procure new funding to meet documented national needs.”

On behalf of the CWC and APW, NUCA is currently seeking sponsors to help offset the required consulting fees and design, production, distribution and publicity expenses. Companies and organizations that contribute $5,000 or more to the APW campaign in 2008 will be acknowledged as sponsors in the final economic impact report, which is due out this summer. For details, please contact Bill Hillman, Linda Holtz or Eben Wyman in the NUCA office (703) 358-9300.

Distribution Construction Receives NCDOL Gold Safety Award

In June, more than 100 accident-free workplace winners were honored at the 33rd Annual North Carolina Department of Labor’s (NCDOL) Safety Awards Banquet. Among those receiving awards was NUCA/NCUCA member Distribution Construction Co. of Greensboro, N.C. The NCDOL safety awards program recognizes private and public firms throughout the state that achieve and maintain a safe and healthy workplace.

To qualify for an annual safety award, a company must have: 1) had no fatalities during the calendar year at the site or location for which the award was given, and 2) maintained an incidence rate at least 50 percent below the average for its particular industry group. Two award levels are distributed — gold and silver. The Gold Award is based on the DART rate, which includes cases of days away from work, restricted activity or job transfer. (The Silver Award is based only on cases with days away from work.)

The Gold Award was presented to Kevin T. Cripps, Distribution Construction’s Safety Manager, by NCDOL Commissioner Cherie K. Berry.
