New NUCA Chapter Forming in Colorado

As previously reported, NUCA has established a Chapter-In-Development (CID) Program to assist members interested in forming a NUCA chapter in their state or region. The association is pleased to announce that 30 utility construction professionals gathered in Englewood, Colo., on Dec. 10 for the first meeting of the NUCA of Colorado Advisory Group.

After identifying several critical issues a statewide chapter could address, those present agreed to move forward with forming the proposed NUCA of Colorado chapter serving the state’s utility construction industry. The group will meet again this month to convene a Steering Committee that will propose a slate of officers and board members for NUCA of Colorado, as well as develop the chapter’s proposed bylaws and dues structure. The Steering Committee will present its recommendations to the NUCA of Colorado Advisory Group in early 2009.

NUCA members in Alabama, California, Texas, Virginia and North Central Florida (Ocala-Gainesville area) have also contacted NUCA Director of Chapter Development Kenneth Sommer to express interest in forming chapters. If you would like to participate in one of these efforts or help start a chapter in your area, contact Sommer at ken@nuca.com or (800) 662-NUCA, ext. 119.

The Georgia Utility Contractors Association Inc. (GUCA) held an area industry meeting at Jocks n’ Jills in Macon, Ga., on Nov. 13. Thirty-seven contractors, vendors and guests were on hand to hear Gary Mason of the Georgia Public Service Commission give a presentation on “Damage Prevention, Large Project Ticket Process and New PRIS Codes.” GUCA President Ricky Harp, Richard Harp Excavation Inc. and GUCA Executive Director Vikki McReynolds updated attendees on upcoming events, safety classes, legislative issues and industry issues, as well as GUCA membership benefits. The meeting was made possible through the sponsorship of GUCA member H & H Insurance Services Inc. The next GUCA Industry meeting will be the GUCA East Georgia Industry Meeting to be held in Augusta, Ga., on Jan. 15, 2009. For more information about GUCA, please visit www.guca.com.

George Hedley to Speak at EXPO ’09: “The Economy Is Slow — Now What?”

George Hedley’s EXPO ‘09 presentation is aimed at trudging through treacherous economic tides.

Now there’s another good reason to attend Utility Construction EXPO ’09 The Big Show. NUCA recently announced that business-building expert, professional business speaker and author George Hedley will make a special 45-minute presentation during the annual membership meeting on Friday, March 6, titled “The Economy is Slower — Now What? 18 Shots You Must Take Now.” What topic could be timelier? All registered EXPO attendees are invited.

As a founder of multiple businesses, Hedley’s roles have included CEO, business owner, project manager, field superintendent, estimator, general contractor, subcontractor and real estate developer. Today, along with managing his development and construction company, he owns HARDHAT Presentations and speaks to national organizations, associations, conventions, company meetings, leadership conferences and customer retreats.

Hedley is a graduate of the University of Southern California in Civil-Structural Engineering and has served as president of five industry associations. His books include: Get Your Business to Work! — Seven Steps to Earning More, Working Less & Living the Life You Want!; Everything Contractors Know About Making A Profit!; and the Business Success Blueprint Series.

Joint Contractor/Engineer Meeting Added to Expo ‘09 Schedule

As part of NUCA’s continuing effort to interact with the civil engineering community, the association will be holding a joint meeting of contractor and engineer attendees at Utility Construction EXPO ’09 in Phoenix, Ariz., March 4-6, 2009. With the goal of improving working relationships between engineers and utility contractors, the meeting will focus on challenges engineers and utility contractors face when working together on projects, as well as frustrations that utility contractors and engineers share with respect to project owners.

The meeting will be held Thursday, March 5, from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. If you would like to participate and/or have contact information for a civil engineer(s) you would like to see attend the meeting, please contact NUCA CEO Bill Hillman at (703) 358-9300 or bhillman@nuca.com.

Second Installment of “Pipelayer” Now Available from NUCA Store at EXPO ‘09

The NUCA Foundation is pleased to announce that the next CD in the Pipe Installation Training Series (Pipelayer) — Chapter 1: “Job Layout” — is now available through the NUCA Store. (Chapter 2: “Excavations, Trenching, Manholes and Backfilling” was released last year.) “Job Layout” is an interactive, 60- to 90-minute, computer-based training module designed to teach semi-experienced pipe crews safe pipe installation using modern equipment and technologies.

The CD can be used for self-study or group training and is divided into five lessons — Safety, Material Layout and Handling, Production and Timing, Tools and Protecting the Installation. Student progress is measured with “check your knowledge” challenge questions at the end of each lesson and a final test at the completion of the module. Although the training series is designed primarily for self-navigation, it can also be used by instructors to train groups of students via an LCD projector in a classroom setting. The entire production is funded by sponsors, friends of NUCA and sales proceeds. To order, visit the NUCA Store at www.nuca.com.

NUCA Now Accepting National Community Service Award Submissions

Last year, Brock Built LLC of Atlanta won the award in the 11 to 50 employee category for its Piedmont Park “Boundless Playgrounds” project in Atlanta. Photo courtesy of BoundlessPlaygrounds.org.

Through the donation of equipment, materials, manpower and money, NUCA members continue to demonstrate their commitment to addressing needs in the communities where they work and live — everything from tackling house repairs for a low-income homeowner to performing site preparation and cleanup for a charity athletic event. Because the scope and breadth of this volunteerism is a source of pride for the industry, NUCA’s National Community Service Awards will again honor those members that have demonstrated exemplary community service. The awards for projects completed in 2008 will be presented during the NUCA Spring Awards Dinner (in conjunction with the annual Washington Summit), which will be held Wednesday, May 20, at the Hotel Monaco in Alexandria, Va.

Any contractor, associate or institutional member of the NUCA may submit a project(s). A panel of judges selected by the Awards Committee will evaluate the entries and choose the overall winners in each of four categories based on the number of company employees. All complete and timely entries will be recognized in Utility Contractor. The deadline for entries is Friday, March 27, 2009. Visit the NUCA Web site at www.nuca.com and click on Awards Program for the entry form and guidelines.
