Taking a Moment for Membership
Every May when the NUCA Membership Directory rolls around, the NUCA family takes a moment to reflect on the importance of our membership. And I say family because that’s what this association is — a group of individuals who have a common love for all things construction, working together with the industry’s best interests in mind. The Patriarchs and Matriarchs at NUCA proper, based a stone’s throw from Capitol Hill, lead the charge against unjust regulation, like the much debated Card Check or Death Tax legislation, while the NUCA
Chapters across the country crusade for the needs of their local contractors.
While all contractors might not see eye to eye all the time, I consider my fellow NUCA members to be my industry brothers and sisters; knowing that I have that family-like support structure when it comes to my business is invaluable. If I have a document or contract that I can’t quite wrap my head around, I know that members of the Contract Documents and Specifications Committee are a mere phone call away. Or if I have a meeting with my congressman or senators, NUCA Vice President of Government Relations Eben Wyman and Ben Gann, Director of Government Relations, are ready to provide me with background info on the legislative issues and the congress people involved.
And those are just a few of the support benefits offered by the NUCA membership community. Need a few more examples? Thumb through the bulk of this issue and you’ll find a directory of hundreds of NUCA Members from all walks of the construction industry. From Washington State to Washington, D.C., we’ve got contractor members in almost every state in the country (45 states for those keeping count). We’ve got Associate Members who provide everything from accounting and wellpoint services to backhoes and ventilation equipment.
There is just one piece of the membership puzzle we’re missing — you! If you’re reading this and your name isn’t listed in one of the directory sections (pages 22-95), we need you. Every voice in NUCA is unique and every one matters. We want to know what red tape is affecting your business and we want to help you through it. Our members are continually working to improve our industry, and every helping hand makes NUCA stronger. Check out the article by Utility Contractors Association of Rhode Island Executive Director Bob LaFleur on page 100 to read how the NUCA Chapter made a name for itself in the summer of 1973. It’s just one of the many NUCA success stories in its history, but these accomplishments wouldn’t be possible without the dedication from our members.
