GUCA Scholarship Foundation Awards

The Georgia Utility Contractors Association (GUCA) Scholarship Foundation is pleased to announce that nine scholarships were awarded to GUCA members’ children this year. The Foundation has two scholarship types: One is the industry scholarship awarded to students who are seeking an education degree related to the utility construction industry and the other is a scholarship for graduating high school seniors entering into college to help promote and further their education.
The Foundation gave two industry scholarships to students in construction and/or building construction programs for 2010. The following received $2,000 each: Derek Buffardi, the son of Derek C. and Martha J. Buffardi, Godwin Pumps, Kennesaw, Ga.; and Daren Higginbotham, the son of Grady Higginbotham and Irene Erwin, Archer Western Contractors Ltd., Atlanta.

The Foundation gave seven high school senior scholarships for 2010. The following received $1,000 each: Christen Elise Carroll, the daughter of Clark and Lisa Carroll, Aiken Grading Co. Dallas, Ga.; Sarah Kicklighter, the daughter of Brian and Jennifer Kicklighter, Southern Champion Construction Inc., Savannah, Ga.; Cooper Lowe, the son of Eddie and Suzanne Lowe, McWane Cast Iron Pipe Co., Macon, Ga.; Jacob Lowery, the son of Timothy and Susanne Lowery, City of Senoia, Senoia, Ga.; Cassandra Merrigan, the daughter of James Merrigan and Beth Cusick, Archer Western Contractors Ltd., Atlanta; Caleb Morris, the son of Buddy and Dawn Morris, Lenox Utility Contractors LLC, Lenox, Ga.; and Nicole K. Young, the daughter of Lonnie and Kim Blackstone, Rhino Services LLC, Palmetto, Ga.

NUCA Foundation Announces Four Scholarship Recipients

The NUCA Foundation for Education and Research has announced four scholarship recipients for the 2010 academic year. The D. A. Foster Memorial Scholarship was awarded to Nicole Wessner of Bethel, Pa. Nicole is the daughter of Sherry and Brian Wessner, who works for NUCA contractor member Schlouch Inc. in Blandon, Pa.

The $2,000 William & Shirley Burgett Scholarship was awarded to Tiffany F. Benton of Green Cove Springs, Fla. Tiffany is the daughter of Mendy and Michael Benton, who works for EWP Construction in Orange Park, Fla. The $4,000 scholarship was awarded to Joshua D. Bryan of Coraopolis, Pa. Joshua Bryan is the son of Lynne and David Bryan, who works for NUCA member Concrete Concepts Inc., in McKees Rocks, Pa. The $1,000 college scholarship was awarded to Megan N. Steeve of Des Moines, Iowa. Megan is the daughter of Katina and Jeremy Steeve, who works for NUCA contractor member Miller the Driller Inc. of Des Moines, Iowa.

In making its selections, the Foundation’s Scholarship Committee considers an applicant’s scholastic standing, ACT and/or SAT scores, extracurricular activities, community service, career goals, work experience and an essay. This year’s essay topic was “Success or Failure: The Impact of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 on the Nation, My State, and My Local Community.” The judges of the Foundation’s 2010 scholarship competition were: Richard Foster, PKF-Mark III Inc., Newtown, Pa.; Alan Gravel, Willow Construction, Powder Springs, Ga.; Wendell Wood, MMJ Consulting Inc., Battle Creek, Mich.; and Debbie Richmond, Armadillo Underground Inc., Fort Myers, Fla.
