The Hawaiian Odyssey Sights, Sounds and Executive Experiences of the Utility Construction EXPO ’08
By Jason Morgan
The sun reflects off the rolling waves crashing against the volcanic rocks. You squeeze the white sand beneath your toes and take in a deep breath of the sweet Hawaiian air — but this isn’t a vacation, it’s business. You’re standing on the beach at the Grand Hyatt Resort and Spa for the National Utility Contractor Association’s (NUCA) Utility Construction EXPO ’08, but it’s far from your usual convention. Instead of focusing on products, NUCA is focusing on people and professional relationships.
NUCA associate and contractor members alike will all attend the stellar lineup of speakers and events, mixing work with fun. Start your Hawaiian adventure off right on Tuesday, Jan. 15 at noon with the NUCA Golf Tournament at the Poipu Beach Club (separate registration required) and end the day with the Welcome Reception, sponsored by Caterpillar Inc., where your plate will spill over with delectable island delicacies.
EXPO’s general sessions kick into high gear Wednesday the awarding of the NUCA Associate of the Year and a Political Outlook from Norm Ornstein — resident scholar at the American Enterprise Institute for Public Policy Research, a political contributor to MacNeil/Lehrer NewsHour and an election analyst for CBS News, followed by the pit bull of personal development Larry Winget and James Bradley, author of Flags of Our Fathers and Flyboys, the next day, Thursday, Jan. 17. After being hyped and humbled by Winget and Bradley, Friday, Jan. 18, brings the Utility Construction Economic Forecast — led by Reed Business Information’s Director of Economics Jim Haughey — which is designed as a business planning tool for the next 12 to 18 months and beyond.
But the informative and insightful general sessions are only half the story. There’s a slew of exciting events lined up for every afternoon. Not to be missed is the annual NUCA Auction — one of the biggest NUCA fundraisers of the year. There will be heated bidding for international trips — including Switzerland, London and Monte Carlo; Australia and New Zealand; Bermuda; and Vancouver, B.C. — and many clamoring over exquisite jewelry, Hammerhead work tools and novelty items like the hilarious remote-controlled golf balls.
After two full days, the Case Construction Equipment-sponsored Fun Lunch: The NUCA 500, on Thursday, Jan. 17, at 11:30 a.m., is a great way to cut loose, be creative and have fun with new friends. Teams will create racecars from an odd assortment of materials and then face off in a no-holds-barred grand prix. Close out Thursday with the optional Sunset Cruise along Kauai’s jaw-dropping south side.
You can’t visit Hawaii without partaking in a traditional luau and NUCA has you covered. Friday evening, Jan. 18, at 6 p.m. is the President’s Luau sponsored by John Deere Construction and Forestry Division. Reminisce about your week in paradise while chowing down and taking in the hula dancers and fire twirlers. The NUCA Ditchdigger of the Year award will be presented, the new officers will be sworn in and the outgoing and incoming presidents will say a few words to close out the grand Hawaiian odyssey that is the NUCA Utility Construction EXPO ’08.
Jason Morgan is associate editor of Utility Contractor.
