Excellence in Excavation
2007 Ditchdigger of the Year Larry Fortin Strives for Industry Quality both On and Off the Jobsite
By Jason Morgan

By day, Larry Fortin walked his Kaccel Co. jobsite — armed with instinct and insight. Quality control was the name of Fortin’s game. By night, Fortin was on the road, traveling to NUCA chapter and local committee meetings. Crusading for the greater good in utility construction, Fortin focused on damage prevention and safety, among other ventures. Always seeking information and understanding, Fortin’s fortitude has earned him a place in the NUCA legacy as the 2007 Ditchdigger of the Year.

The secret to Fortin’s success?

“Knowledge. The simple answer is the knowledge. The amount of information available to us, through so many different avenues, that directly relates to the efficiency of our operations is an incredibly powerful asset to have, especially as a small local contracting business,” Fortin explains. “In the past, my wife and I have learned so many of our lessons the hard way. If I were starting over, I would have a business plan and it would include a firm simple commitment to using the resources available through NUCA. The safety benefits alone are immeasurable, as is the amount of information absorbed and realized through participating on the committees and socializing and hearing the successful strategies of other contractors around the country.

“It’s an honor and a privileged to be chosen as the Ditchdigger of the Year award given by my peers. It’s the most prestigious award I’ve received and I appreciate it greatly.”
